Sustainability Executive Manager at Suzano

In a context of increasingly scarce natural resources, it is no longer possible to innovate without sustainability serving as a value lever. At Suzano, we understand the implementation of sustainable development as essential both for society and for the long-term viability of our business. We recognize that our operations generate impacts throughout the entire value chain and, with the support of partners, we seek to enhance positive impacts and mitigate negative ones, reducing risks and creating new opportunities.

We believe in the integration of innovation and sustainability as a means to strengthen business competitiveness and promote social transformation. One word summarizes this concept: innovability. Through traditional genetic improvement, we aim to increase the productivity and climate adaptability of eucalyptus trees, generating greater results with lower use of natural resources. Our industrial advances also seek, for example, to reduce the volume of waste generated and expand the use of by-products and inputs capable of increasing product strength and durability. In addition, we work on the development of new materials based on forest resources that can replace fossil-based alternatives, contributing to climate change mitigation and promoting long-term sustainability.

It was with these goals in mind that we invested 11 years of research, in partnership with the consumer goods industry, to develop Eucafluff, the first fluff pulp produced 100% from eucalyptus fiber. In addition to providing comfort and discretion to the end consumer, this product has the potential to establish itself as a sustainable alternative for the disposable hygiene products industry, such as feminine hygiene products, diapers, and pet pads.

A comparative Life Cycle Assessment shows that Eucafluff delivers positive results across several categories, including greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, fossil fuel consumption, and land use. The harvesting cycle of our eucalyptus — up to four times shorter than that of North American pine (7 years versus 27 years) — combined with the high productivity of our forestry techniques, means that producing 1 m³ of eucalyptus wood requires approximately 14% of the land area needed to produce the same amount of pine wood*.

Regarding land use, it is worth highlighting that Suzano maintains conservation areas equivalent to approximately 39% of the more than 2 million hectares of forests under our management. However, our commitment goes much further: we operate broadly in biodiversity conservation and in strengthening neighboring communities. Above all, we seek to build long-term partnerships with key participants in our value chain, integrating sustainability and innovation to generate positive social, environmental, and economic impacts.

What is your company’s commitment? If you believe in the power of innovation combined with sustainability, we invite you to join us on this journey.
